As the skin ages, it is normal for changes in elasticity, pigmentation, and strength to begin to appear. Although it is a completely natural and inevitable process, factors like sun exposure, hydration, and smoking determine how the layers of our skin age.
Our skin is made up of three layers of tissue:
- Epidermis: The top layer of the skin acts as a protective barrier, making new skin cells and providing your skin with color.
- Dermis: The middle layer makes up most of the skin thickness. It is in charge of producing sweat, supplying blood, and growing hair.
- Hypodermis: The bottom layer of the skin acts as a cushion for muscles and bones, regulates body temperature, and connects the nerve tissue with other parts of the body.
Besides natural aging, changes in these skin layers can also become accelerated due to internal and external factors.
